Bleeds by Wednesday is an album that blends the sound of Appalachian blues, funk, bluegrass, and too many genres to list. The North Carolina band’s sophomore album follows similar sounds to their debut album, Rat Saw God, while offering a more mature reflection on their time in the music industry. Lead Singer Karly Hartzman writes with a maturity beyond her years about love lost, abuse of power dynamics in disenfranchised America, and how your home shapes you.
The Highs:
Bitter Everyday: This song is an example of what I think Wednesday does best: Poetic lyricism over whiney guitar rifts. It’s so odd to say (type 😐) but you just gotta listen.
Carolina Murder Suicide: Who doesn’t love a good ballad about a tragic small-town event? The swelling piano backing the sustained lyrics is just perfect
The Eh:
Cover: Shit is freaky in a backroom's shag carpet kinda way. It reminds me of those rabbits from the Rabbids Wii video game that got skinned.
A Complaint:
It took me longer than average to discern the songs from one another, because many of the songs sound similar.
Overall, I like. A good album for longing for something familiar or wanting to return to a time you looked fondly on.
