TILT is Songbird's album review section! I make it a weekly mission to listen to new music, and the one that makes the biggest impression on me gets a video and a blog post. It's all about celebrating music all across the spectrum. Please enjoy
Today I listened to Magpie. This is the newest album by the Canadian indie rock group Peach Pit.
Even though it came out earlier last year, I will be going to a Peach Pit concert this week, so I gotta do some
prep. Songbird Olivia, our Proofreader*, is much more well-versed in their discography, and I'm coming along
for the ride.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh… indie! This is my default genre. When I work, play games, or auxing for a group of
people where I don't know the vibe, Indie is the vibe, and it always works. My favorites are Clairo, Arcy Drive,
and the Backseat Lovers. However, Indie is a genre where you will hear one song from an artist and go down
a rabbit hole, or just listen to that one song by them.

Notice how I didn’t say peach pit in my list? They have never really stuck with me. I don’t hate them by any means, but if it’s between throwing on “Attic Sessions” or” You and Your Friends,” I’m picking Arcy Drive any day of the week. Prepping for this upcoming concert, I have started to enjoy their older projects more, loving their hits, instrumentation, and the awesome voice of their lead singer. They rock out, but have now “wowed” me.
Now, with all that being said, how did I enjoy Magpie font to back? It’s a vibe. Wonderful guitars, great melodies, but I find it blending into the background at times, with some tracks finding it hard to stick out.
The Highs:
Every Little Thing: This is a really good little indie track. One thing that Peach Pit never fails at is their instrumentation. It's really
good.
Did You Love Somebody: This song is a little slower in the tracklist, but how vulnerable the lead singer, Neil Smith, sounds on this song.
It feels reall intimate, and this is one I revisited alot before listening to this again.
A complaint:
Steralization: This project feels like some of its tracks are just padding out the runtime. This does not mean that they are bad tracks. They are more just offensive or boring. I would have loved to see more tracks that stood out. The soundscape and the departures that this album takes when compared to other Peach Pit albums are interesting, but it feels like they are scared to go deeper, really…
This album is a vibe, and I think it is great for an afternoon. Just know that it's a little more passive than other indie albums. I give it a 3 out of 5.
